One of the true ironies of advocacy in favour of bi and ace exclusion is its tendency to justify itself by recourse to a narrative of inclusivity that never actually existed.

“The community has always been unified by the shared experience of same-gender attraction”, they’ll say, ignoring the fact that for the better part of their history, the gay and lesbian communities were essentially separate entities that often regarded each other as bitter enemies.

“Gay rights activism in America was founded by trans women”, they’ll say, carefully skirting around the fact that this event was followed almost immediately by cisgender gay men co-opting the movement for their own ends, and that trans women consequently ended up spending the next several decades being vigorously attacked by the very activism they’d been substantially responsible for kicking off.

The truth of the matter is that there’s never been any rhyme or reason to who gets to be part of the community and who doesn’t; those boundaries are and always have been drawn along the lines of intra-community politics, and any effort at explaining them with recourse to specific definitions of gender and sexual orientation is a self-serving fairy tale.
